“Deep Blue”

Title/Theme: “Deep Blue”; Key/Structure: E Minor

Comment about this piece:  Deep Blue has two meanings. Here on Cape Cod, we’re surrounded by ocean, and it’s hard not to be awed by the profoundness of it all. So, on one hand “Deep Blue” contemplates this vastness of nature. On the other hand, “Deep Blue” is the name of the computer which beat Kasparov (the first time a computer defeated a world chess champion in tournament conditions). As we march quickly into Artificial Intelligence and all it implies, I thought it interesting to look at “Deep Blue” from these two perspectives: the beauty and largesse of nature – and our changing role as humans. My aim was to create a piece which “flows”, yet captures emotional beauty – sadness and melancholy at times, and uplifting and spiritual at others. (Equipment/Setup: Steinway Model B; Earthworks QTC-40 (stereo pair) Mics 12″ above strings; Apogee Duet Interface; Logic Pro X; Mono Compressor (Studio FET), plus a “spherical” reverb).
